Tim Burton's new film Planet of the Apes The best film of the year so far? What did you think.
So which of you buggers didn't go just because it is a remake of a classic and got slated in the reviews?

SF is my preferred genre too
I thought this version of Apes was fairly good, paying homage to the original and to the book.
Have to say that the ending confused the fsck out of me though ... I guess that's time anomalies for you!
It will end up in my DVD collection next to The Phantom Menace ;-)

I thought it was quite poor.
Mark Wahlberg is staggeringly bad. Not so much wooden as finest mahogany. None of the relationships within the movie are explored at all. The ending is truly dire. The movie has no heart at all. It was also utterly humourless.

Glad you have a sense of humour Mr Spoon ;-)
IMHO it's a movie about a relationship with power and keeping the masses dumbed-down to enable easy manipulation and thus stay in power. On this level it stays true to the original film.
Also, although the ending was a bit confusing, it was bold, and it had the apes as being as technologically advanced as modern day humans, as per the original book. I thought that was a nice touch. Still a contraversial ending for people who see it, but for different reasons.
I liked the symbololgy in it (if there is such a word), how symbols develop over generations and their meanings are lost.
I'm not saying it's a great movie, but it is a worthy movie, certainly better than Sleepy Hollow IMO. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it, possibly because I had such low expectations.
Acting and judging quality thereof is subjective - nothing stuck out in my mind as particularly bad acting although I know it's popular to slate Walberg or whatever his name was.

It wasn't horrible. But it wasn'tgood or even decent. It has a little visual style and didn't put you to sleep. The ending was intresting but so obviously there to leave the series open to yet another sequel. I think Skin was being nice when he said Wahlberg was finest mahogany. Let's just say some of the ape extras acted better.

First off I am a huge fan of tim burton and I think his films are great, and on a side note...miker I don't see how you think POTA is better than sleepy hollow, personaly i think sleepyhollow is a great film. But anyway being a Tim Burton fanatic, i was disapointed with POTA, not from the directing stnad point but the story itself was poorly written...i get the feeling not a lot of time was put into it. But visualy it was a great film.
